Which console for GTA 6?

GTA VI launches exclusively on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S – if you don't own a console yet, a decision is due before November 19. Here are all prices (German RRPs, August 2026), the expected performance, and an honest take on what suits whom.

ConsoleRRPNote
Xbox Series S (512 GB)€499.99Digital only; 512 GB gets tight for GTA VI
Xbox Series S (1 TB)€599.99Digital only
PS5 Digital Edition€599.99825 GB SSD, no drive
PS5 (disc)€649.991 TB SSD
Xbox Series X Digital€749.991 TB SSD, no drive
Xbox Series X€799.991 TB SSD, with drive
PS5 Pro€899.992 TB SSD, no drive (attachable)

Both makers raised prices sharply in 2026 (Sony +€100 in April, Microsoft up to +€200 in August). Street prices often undercut RRP; Xbox consoles are currently hard to find in stock.

Where will GTA VI run best?

What Rockstar says Official

Little. No official resolution or frame-rate figures exist. What we know: trailer 2 was captured entirely on a base PS5 – a statement that the game is meant to shine without Pro hardware. No platform-exclusive content has been announced.

What's expected Expected

Industry observers (incl. Digital Foundry) expect 30 fps on all consoles, as with Red Dead Redemption 2. The PS5 Pro should deliver the best image via its PSSR AI upscaling; a 60 fps mode is confirmed nowhere. Series S will run the game with visible cutbacks.

Is the PS5 Pro worth it?

The Pro costs €250 more than the disc PS5. In return: the fastest console GPU of this generation (16.7 vs. 10.2 TFLOPS), PSSR upscaling and 2 TB of storage – not a bad argument for a game of unknown but surely enormous download size.

  • For: best expected GTA VI presentation on console, double storage, most future-proof option.
  • Against: no confirmed Pro feature for GTA VI, no disc drive (GTA VI doesn't need one – the box only holds a code), and the price gap buys almost three Ultimate Editions.

Quick decision helper

Tightest budget

Xbox Series S (1 TB) at €599.99 – beware the 512 GB model with a 100 GB+ game incoming. Note the PS5 Digital Edition costs the same and is far more powerful.

Best all-rounder

PS5 Digital (€599.99) or PS5 disc (€649.99) – full base-console performance on the platform Rockstar demos the game on, and where roughly three quarters of pre-orders happen.

Maximum quality

PS5 Pro (€899.99) – technically the best GTA VI option with the most storage. The premium buys image quality, not exclusive gameplay.

Xbox ecosystem

Xbox Series X (from €749.99) – the right pick if friends and library live on Xbox or Game Pass matters. GTA VI ships here in full.
